FOCI’s Emotion Tracking

See how Grace’s mom uses FOCI’s emotion records to keep abreast of her daughter's learning progress.

Grace is a 4th grade student. Although Mom is very busy at work, she hopes to pay more attention to Grace’s learning and growth at the same time. FOCI is like a small focus tracker for Mom to keep abreast of her daughter's learning progress.

Mom downloaded the App and paired FOCI with the phone. Grace was excited and can't wait to put it on.

Mom noticed that the 'breathing signal score' was low after a while, and she helped Grace adjust how she wore it, with the help of the in-app wearing guidelines. Sure enough, the breathing signal score gradually improved.

After wearing FOCI for 2 days, Grace found that emotion recognition has gradually become more and more accurate. She looks forward to machine learning to complete customizing to her.

When Mom was helping with Grace’s homework, she noticed that the fluid ball keeps changing to different colors, representing different emotional states in real time. While the emotional record ball is formed when Grace maintains an emotion state for at least a few minutes. Mom thought that if she reviews Grace's learning state, emotion record balls should be more useful, much like the overall pace and mileage of a run provides more insight than momentary pace.

Every morning, Mom helped Grace put on the FOCI before she goes to school, and when she got off work in the evening, she could review how well Grace is doing for the day from the emotion records, at a glance. Sometimes the deep focus time of the day is only about 1 hour with lots of gray distraction balls or no balls at all. Mom would try to find out what happened to Grace in school and it's often accompanied by some timely admonition.

Of course, there are also times when Grace is doing particularly well, with deep focus times of nearly 4 or 5 hours, the yellow balls fill the screen, and sometimes with some rare flow balls. Grace will be very excited and would show off to her mom. Mom would then give Grace appropriate encouragement.

Mom could feel Grace's conscientiousness toward learning is gradually improving, and she is very pleased.

Emotion tracking

What is it?

When you see the ‘fluid emotion spheroid’ change to one of the 6 primary emotions, for example stress, or focus, this means that FOCI has detected a momentary breathing pattern corresponding to being in that emotion state. However emotion is often fleeting, unless it decides to settle into a stable streak, i.e. for you to reach an emotion streak ball, this momentary emotion state needs to be sustained for at least a few minutes.

What to do:

‘Fluid emotion spheroid’ lets you get a sense of your real-time emotion state. You can gain a sense of control of this emotion spheroid through breathing. Please note, it is better to read your emotions states based on the emotion streak balls instead of the ‘fluid emotion spheroid’, as we tend to consciously alter our breathing when we watch the ‘fluid emotion spheroid’ on the main page. As a result, real-time tracking is primarily used for Biofeedback Training. We would recommend proceeding with biofeedback training systematically from level 1 to 4.

What is it?

When you see a ‘focus streak ball’, this means that FOCI has detected a focus emotion streak. It is detected from a sustained breathing pattern of at least a few minutes corresponding to being in a state of cognitive focus. This could happen if you are fully immersed in working on a task.

What to do:

‘Focus streak balls’ let you know that you have been in cognitive focus, even if you are playing a game or watching a movie. You can use this knowledge to improve your awareness of attention, and to enter focus more easily.

What is it?

When you see a ‘distraction streak ball’, this means that FOCI has detected a distraction emotion streak. It is detected from a sustained breathing pattern of at least a few minutes corresponding to not being in a state of cognitive focus. This could happen if there are distractions in your environment or random thoughts sneak up on you.

What to do:

‘Distraction streak balls’, let you know that you have not been in cognitive focus, even if you may be working hard. You can use this knowledge to improve your awareness of attention, and to refocus more easily.

What is it?

When you see a ‘calm streak ball’, this means that FOCI has detected a calm emotion streak. It is detected from a sustained breathing pattern of at least a few minutes corresponding to being in a state of cognitive calm. This could happen when you are working at a slow tempo or easing off.

What to do:

‘Calm streak balls’, let you know that at the moment, you are more at ease than usual, or in the process of easing yourself from a stressful situation. You can use this knowledge to improve your awareness of emotive states, and gain better control over the work tempo.

What is it?

When you see a ‘stress streak ball’, this means that FOCI has detected a stress emotion streak. It is detected from a sustained breathing pattern of at least a few minutes corresponding to cognitive stress. This could happen when you are struck by a negative thought, or by working on a demanding task.

What to do:

‘Stress streak balls' let you know that you have been more tense than usual. It is very normal and could happen often throughout the day. You can use this knowledge to improve your awareness of emotive states, and gain better control over how it affects you.

What is it?

When you see a ‘fatigue streak ball’, this means that FOCI has detected a fatigue emotion streak. It is detected from a breathing pattern  corresponding to cognitive fatigue. You are likely to see ‘fatigued’, if you have strained your focus from work.

What to do:

‘Fatigue streak balls’, let you know that you are in a state of attention fatigue and need to refresh your attention. While fatigue can be a good sign of working hard, frequent fatigue streaks indicates that you need to take steps to pause for a break, manage your energy levels through better planning and sleeping.

What is it?

When you see a ‘flow streak ball’, this means that FOCI has detected a flow emotion streak. It is detected from a sustained breathing pattern corresponding to cognitive flow. This is sustained deep cognitive focus, where you are likely to experience full involvement in your task at hand, and enjoyment of the process of the activity.

What to do:

‘Flow streak balls’ let you know that you have been in cognitive flow for a sustained period. Creating flow is a bit like building up momentum of focus, once you are in flow you have to stay in it.

What is it?

‘Deep focus minutes’ is your cumulative cognitive focus time for the day. It is compared with that of yesterday, last week, your weekly best and personal best. These trends are an approximation of how well you are doing.

What to do:

‘Deep focus minutes’ lets you know how much you have focused when you work on different schedules, or are under different physical or emotive states. You can use this knowledge to plan your schedule, based on your daily cycle.
